Safe-T Rider (Classroom)

Classroom Program Description

Safe-T Rider is a character developed by the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation to teach young children safety rules for riding on elevators, escalators and moving walks. On an eight-minute video - Safe-T Rider uses "rap" music and a little magic to show children ages 8-10 how to safely navigate these pieces of building transportation equipment.

The 35-minute classroom program highlights the rules in positive terms, i.e., "always ride the escalator standing up and facing forward" on the language level of an elementary school student. Using a multi-sensory approach to teach children the rules, the program includes a family "pass along" feature: a tear-out test in the activity book. According to returns received, the Safe-T Rider program is reaching 50% of participating children's parents.

The industry's goal is to educate 500,000 second graders during the 2011/2012 school year through the school systems. The program was piloted in 1991. Many individuals have also used the Safe-T Rider program in classroom settings for church groups, scout troops and day care centers. In addition, local groups like the Boys and Girls Club, Kiwanis, Rotary Club, etc. have used the program. Children, in general, and inner city children--those with the most exposure to elevator and escalators--love Safe-T Rider and the program!
